It’s the Little Things (Or, to be more grammatically correct: They’re the Little Things)

So while planning my challenges, I suppose I didn’t take illness into account. Oh, it’s no biggie. Just one of those run-of-the-mill sore throats/colds that you get from your kid…because he goes to school and spends his days around other kids. And kids are gross. Anyway, I was hoping to do something a little out-of-routine tomorrow but I’d rather take a couple of days to rest and get over this faster so that I can take on the world!!!

However on days like today, when energy is hard to come by, I think about why I’m doing such a challenge – to shake things up in my world a bit – and while I sit here watching my fire and some TV with my trusty cup of tea never far away, I am reminded that balance is key. The small things are just as important as the special and unusual things. It’s like the popular blog/book 1000 Awesome Things. There is so much awesomeness that can be found in the small, everyday things in life. Today, as I sip soup and tea, my sick little unfocused brain keeps alternating between planning more cool stuff for the coming days and weeks, and taking a step back to ponder the small things in our everyday life and how much they add to our lives. A few things I’ve thought about today:

  • Crunchy apples are the best. I cut up 2 apples for Aidan and myself to share. One was bursting with loud crunchiness; the other was ‘meh’. I picked out the good ones and left the ‘meh’ ones for Aidan. What kind of a mom am I? Oh, who cares…the point is that crunchy apples are delish!
  • Watching dust dance in the air when the sun is streaming into the living room. It’s pretty cool, even though it probably says questionable things about my housekeeping skills. (Old farm house and pets = good excuses.)
  • Snoring cats. My cat Oliver snores. Loudly. And then I think about how funny it would be to stick a tiny cat-sized snore strip over his nose, which leads me to laugh at myself which, in turn, makes me think that maybe my son’s right when he says, “Mom, you think you’re funny. But you’re not. Trust me.

Nah, I’m funny. Even if he disagrees.

And once again it is all about appreciating the moments … no matter where you find them … I am being reminded of all kinds of important truths as I read about your life these days. Thanks for the lessons.
